War Memorial

The memorial on the Kapellenberg was built in 1923/24 to commemorate the young men of Burgbernheim who lost their lives in World War I. Lack of funds initially led to the planting of a “grove of heroes” on the slope of the Himmelfahrtsberg. The arrangement of 64 oaks in the shape of an “iron cross” is still easily visible from afar and can be observed from passing trains.

In 1923 it was decided to build a memorial of stone. The dedication ceremony took place on May 9, 1925 in the presence of ca. 6,000 guests. Later the names of those fallen in World War II were added.

Burgbernheim suffered 84 losses in World War I and 205 in World War II. Their individual names are engraved on the exterior of the memorial.
