St. Johannis in Burgbernheim

Burgbernheim was first mentioned historically in the year 741 in the context of a donation to the bishopric of Würzburg. This fact, along with the dedication to St. John (“St. Johannis”), suggest that a church existed locally at a very early date.

A building in the Romanesque style was founded in 1102. Preserved from that time is the portal on the south side of St. Johannis. The church tower dates to the 13th century. In 1443 the Gothic choir was attached to the nave. Because it had become structurally unsound, the nave was replaced in 1874/76 by a Neo-Gothic building.

The church was last substantially renovated between 1967 and 1971. The painted decorations of the choir were restored to their original late-Gothic appearance, while the ceiling, seats and balconies in the nave were painted to match.
